Are mental health problems more prevalent with children from poorer backgrounds?

November 14th 2015

A report has been published (Children of the New Century: Mental health findings from the Millennium Cohort Study) by Centre for Mental Health and UCL Institute of Education. The report can be found here (http://www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=9faa732d-883b-42c1-b223-bb9de11a109c)

Some of the key findings:

10% of 11- year olds have severe mental health problems

Over 20% of children experience mental health problems at some point between ages 3 and 11.

Children from low-income families are four times more likely to experience mental health problems than those in higher income families.

The report has been discussed here by the Childrens and Young People’s Mental Health Condition – http://www.cypmhc.org.uk/resources/high_number_of_11_year_olds_from_low_income_famili/ (this link will open in a new tab/window).
