Lets take action against OCD!

February 20th 2017

This week (20-26th of February) is OCD Action’s week of action. Week of action is all about taking action against OCD. Whether you have or currently are personally suffering from OCD, know someone that is, or you just want to make the lives for those who suffer from OCD better: you can get involved.

This week is all about collectively fighting OCD, taking action to overcome OCD, ending the stigma and negative perceptions that surround OCD. If you let it OCD can ruin and rule your life, strip you of your independence and happiness. However, OCD can be beaten. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Together by raising awareness this week we can make the world a better place for people struggling daily with OCD or watching someone around them suffer from this debilitating illness.

There is so much you can do to get involved. Firstly, you can order a free action pack from OCD Action which is filled with activities, information and some little tattoos and stickers which you can wear to show your support during week of action. If this sounds like something you would like to receive, you can send an email over to info@ocdaction.org.uk just tell them how many you want and to which address is best to be sent to, you can even remain anonymous if you prefer. This will be sent over to you, first class on the same working day.  Alternatively, you can call 020 7253 5272 and request a pack.

Over on the OCD Action website, from the 20th of February, there is a whole page dedicated to week of action. You can create your action plan, which can be used to help you, a friend or a family member beat OCD. There are four categories you can choose from: get help to fight your OCD, support someone else with OCD, campaign for a better deal and help us help others. By making an action plan, you will receive information and support based on your needs and the category you choose.

There are also other ways to get involved, including fundraising. One of our very own, YAPers has already hosted a bake sale, which raised nearly £100 for OCD Action. Well done Molly! There is one more cake sale being hold by one of our own (Alisha), so good luck! If you want to raise money for OCD Action through a cake sale, coffee morning or even something more extreme like a skydive or tough mudder, you can! If you need any help or more information about fundraising, you can email OCD Action’s lead fundraiser Charlie at Charlie@ocdaction.org.uk

If you haven’t got the time to organise an event, there are other very simple ways you can get involved with week of action. You can text OWOA17 £3 to 70070 to donate £3. You can also get involved online by taking a picture of you wearing your #takeaction stickers and temporary tattoos during the week, and you can tweet it to @ocdaction. This week is a perfect opportunity to get meaningful conversations started around OCD to help end the stigma and the negative stereotypes that surround this crippling illness. You can also tweet using the hashtag #OCDwoa to share your experiences, stories and advice of how you took action against OCD; you never know who you may be helping.

Here at the YAP, as a group of young people who suffer from OCD, I can say on behalf of everyone that we would not want anyone to go through the hell that is OCD. We know how awful OCD can be and how much of an impact it can have on every aspect of the sufferer’s lives from their work and studies to their friends and relationships. OCD is nothing to be ashamed of. There is help out there to get your life back on track. You don’t have to be at the mercy of OCD forever.

We are really looking forward to seeing what you’re be doing this week to help spread awareness and take action against OCD! The Take Action website is now live and can be found at www.ocdaction.org.uk/take-action
